The portraits from Hillary’s current series are a marriage of plastics, made by layering acrylic on vinyl. Due to an overexposure to oil paint several years ago, Hillary was forced to convert to the use of acrylics. His change in medium led to the development of a unique painting process that occurs in phases. First, the hole of the LP is sealed with paper and primer. Then thin diluted layers of pigment in water are pooled and poured over the surface. As a result, the fluids become fossilized under a layer of varnish. Similar to the Old Master technique of glazing, this step-by-step method is repeated until the image is significantly built up with paint layers such that the surface bears resemblance to porcelain or china.

Dana uses vinyl records to create "thots" in order to record his unfiltered concousiness into physical forms. Also vinyl records symbolizes the commercial music industry. A industry that transforms the emotions and narratives of artists into commercial products. By melting down the vinyl and reshaping it, Dana is reshaping this commercial system and making it bend for benefits.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkCz61_ILSNyfH4YD8iE_FGDf3FaWAVAguKV_oO3jzALGoMRDDD2KYs5kmF2aBR-KUdxbPGnRN0QF0gsXYGxqxi_BDkZHArK7mJE_IaJkdNnAfz-TkG9oVr6JO3X6CXwoMZGNJM9gHFeM/s1600/Music-from-wood_1200.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1196" data-original-width="1200" height="636" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkCz61_ILSNyfH4YD8iE_FGDf3FaWAVAguKV_oO3jzALGoMRDDD2KYs5kmF2aBR-KUdxbPGnRN0QF0gsXYGxqxi_BDkZHArK7mJE_IaJkdNnAfz-TkG9oVr6JO3X6CXwoMZGNJM9gHFeM/s640/Music-from-wood_1200.jpg" width="630" /></a><br />
<br />
The pictures create their own stories as they take on a life of their own, forming narratives that are completed in the viewer’s imagination. What the viewer reads into each image is as important as what was in her own head as she constructs them. What is innocent in the eyes of one viewer can appear provocative to another.<br />

<b><br />Rhed Fawell </b>is the founder of <b>Edinburgh Collage Collective</b>.<br />
She will present at <a href="http://longplayingart.blogspot.com/2018/04/vinylism.html" target="_blank">Vinylism</a>: an international selection of collages from ECC 2018 Open Submission Project.
The theme of this year’s project was the vinyl record. Once ubiquitous, now niche, the vinyl record inspired over 200 submissions to the project from artists around the world. ECC has selected over 100 of the best of these for the exhibition.<br />

Muller appropriates album art in a painterly style that is both whimsical and factual. The paintings are autobiographical and expressive; adoring as well as historically referential. He is careful to include details like hype stickers, anachronistic price tags, and extinct record shop labels, always attending to age, use, wear, and tear.<br />

<b><br /></b>
<b>WHAT:</b> The table is made of steel rods and filled it with beach rocks, then it was lowered into the ocean near Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay, where over the course of two months it accumulated living accretions from the ocean. Atop the table is an oversize sound-amplifying funnel reminiscent of the hailing horns used on whaling ships, which is constructed of laser-cut panels of polycarbonate lashed together with nylon zip ties. The horn amplifies and concentrates a sound recording made by a hydrophone close to where the table was submerged.
<br />
<br />
<b>WHY:</b> Sounding derives from the book Moby-Dick by Herman Melville, which has long been a source of inspiration for LaBianca and Fortescue. Their fascination with Moby-Dick comes in part from its detailed evocation of the bygone crafts of sailing and whaling and the struggles of men at sea, and also from its powerful and ever-relevant dissection of monomania. Through this work they aim to conjure the era of the book’s writing through the use of period forms such as a cabriole-legged table and hailing horn, while making it also very much of the moment by incorporating contemporary sound recordings and digital fabrication technologies.
'Sounding' provides a direct link to the living oceans surrounding the Bay Area through sight, sound, smell, and touch. In both form and concept it also links to the historical, literary, and metaphorical oceans of Moby-Dick.<br />

Branching off of this research the studio has developed ‘tipton’s niptons’, a project that came from CEO zachary tipton’s girlfriend. ‘two years ago, my girlfriend yulia had an epiphany. She said ‘why don’t you make nipple pasties out of vinyl?’ when she said that, I was like, I gotta marry this woman.’ They are now married and after two years of prototyping, the product is finally ready.<br />

The piece you see above is entitled Hitsville USA. It's a mixed media artwork cut from 50 original 7-inch, 12-inch and 78 vinyl records, each one chosen because it features the name of a US state.<br />
<br />
Says <b>Keith</b>:
"I started by collecting songs with titles that mentioned tube stations. As the collection grew I realised I could construct a working tube map from them and have so far completed seven tube maps called the Going Underground series. I then completed a series of maps of the UK – titled Hitsville UK, after The Clash song – before attempting the US map, which became Hitsville USA.
The biggest part of creating each piece is searching for those 50 records – a far harder task than I’d originally thought but very rewarding. The records range from the obvious, such as Massachusetts by the Bee Gees to the more arcane and obscure. such as Kentucky Highway by Cyclops Eye. All the records are varied in genre and style are very much a musical road trip across the states."<br />

<br />
<br />
"The original thought was that I would use my own personal record collection as my source material but I soon realised I had too much of a personal connection to it. So it’s a case of trawling second hand records shops, records fairs, charity shops and of course the internet. For the past year I’ve been collecting records with New York place names in their title and have just completed a map of the New York Subway – Harlem to South Ferry."

He runs five successful vinyl companies – based on his longtime love of education, records, outsider art, and repurposing junk into handmade art pieces. He makes records by hand, one at a time, on 1940’s record cutting lathes. He runs several record labels and travels the world teaching crowds at events and festivals the secret art of vinyl record production. Michael's vinyl mini-empire is delivering living documents that are deeply rooted in a rich history and treasured artifacts that travel well into the future.<br />

In a world of ubiquitous digital files and streaming audio the lathe cut
record is a unique and precious artifact catering to the deep human
desire for the tangible. The preciousness of an object that is not mass
produced or effortlessly duplicated is becoming more recognized by folks
looking for something beyond the hollow take-n-toss culture propagated
by big business. All five of Michael's companies <b>PIAPTK, Soild Gold,
LatheCuts.com, MobileVinylRecorders.com and The Science Of Sound</b> create
these objects, with art and care - and they can play the music forever.<br />

Dixon strives to make musical artifacts that require more than easy,
passive consumption. Many releases have built-in, minor, inconveniences
to playback or purchase that Dixon feels enriches the experience
through intentionality and the investment of one of this generations
most valuable resources: time. Whether it is a cassette tape that is
bolted together between two records and packaged inside of a faux candy
bag, or a 10” with a paint by numbers cover that requires the purchaser
to send a photo of themselves holding their painted cover in order to
receive the companion CD/Vinyl hybrid disc, Dixon feels that the more
someone handles and interacts with an object, the more they will
appreciate it.<br />

and Northern France. He later migrated to the States. By his late teens
he was living in New York City and his "old world" heritage became fully
exposed to the "factory" (Andy Warhol) cult. Imagine the clash of those
roots with the imagery of booming "pop". That’s his style; "nouveau
pop".<br />

Although being a self taught painter, he got the help and
needed encouragement from many well established artists. His unique
layering technique fully developed once he changed his medium to acrylic
paints. Those he mixes himself and uses some of his favorite Gauguin
paintings as inspiration to create his ever growing color palette.<br />

His
work confronts us with the same blunt force as that of a child asking
about sex. No topic is "off limit"; let yourself be drawn into the
subject matter and your imagination challenged, while execution and
color engulf you into his world.<br />

Marclay's
work explores connections between sound, noise, photography, video, and
film. A pioneer of using gramophone records and turntables as musical
instruments to create sound collages, Marclay is, in the words of critic
Thom Jurek, perhaps the "unwitting inventor of turntablism."
His own use of turntables and records, beginning in the late 1970s, was
developed independently of but roughly parallel to hip hop's use of the
instrument.<br />

<br />
<b>Fabrizio Trotta</b> was born in Paola in 1973, in Calabria, where he currently lives and works after a long musical and artistic experience in Milan. He is a self-taught artist, while in his Milanese years he gained a diploma in Sound Engineering in 1994 and a university degree in Computer Science in 2001.For years he significantly undertook such activity of musical composer, arranger and producer. However, this especially gave him the right training to interpret the sound vibrations that he later converted in visual vibrations in his paintings.Fabrizio Trotta modulates soundwaves and frequencies with many materials and textures. His predilection for the materials and the colour, and his wish to involve the use of all our senses, including olfaction, took him to widen his artistic research to minimal paintings, realized with oil, pigments or spices. In this artworks, called “Chromotherapy” and “Chromoaromatherapy”, the colour, in his therapeutic and cathartic function, becomes the unique protagonist being represented as “material rain” through the new and original painting technique called “Spectrogram”, that reproduces on canvas a 3D spectrogram. After he met public approval in Italy and abroad, and with his works featuring in private and public collections, he creates the “Playing Art” in 2008. This is a new concept of a pictorial, dynamic, interactive and subtly playful art, whose potential is closely linked to the possibility of interaction and intervention by the owner/observer on the painting itself.<br />
