X - RAY AUDIO

Many older people in Russia remember seeing and hearing strange vinyl type discs when they were young. The discs had partial images of skeletons on them, were called 'Bones' or 'Ribs' and originated in the Cold War years of the Soviet Union.

In an era when the recording industry was ruthlessly controlled by the State, music-mad bootleggers had found an incredible alternative means of making illegal copies of forbidden recordings - they repurposed used X Ray plates obtained from local hospitals.
The X-Ray Audio Project is telling this amazing  story of forbidden music, cold war culture, bootleg technology and human endeavour with an online archive, a book, an award winning documentary, live events and a travelling exhibition. The project is supported by Arts Council England and has received a large amount of PRESS and media coverage.

Tapebox

Social Satan by SCULPTURE (Sound and Vision Conglomerate)

-

Sculpture’s animation requires the use of a video camera to convey its magic, but as can be seen from their videos the effort is well worth it. Just the knowledge of the latent potential contained within the vinyl surface serves to enhance the experience of the music and the spinning disc, even to the naked eye, is a hypnotic spectacle.

Sculpture’s music, is a mixture of psychedelia, hauntology and turntablism, is a perfect match for their striking visuals. Other films by the duo can be viewed on Tapebox (they’re very much worth your time).

Thierry Guetta - Mr. Brainwash

Broken Vinyl Record Portraits by Thierry Guetta aka Mr. Brainwash

Mr. Brainwash, often stylized as MBW, is the moniker of Paris-born, Los Angeles based filmmaker and street artist Thierry Guetta. According to the Banksy-directed film Exit Through the Gift Shop, Guetta began as a proprietor of a clothing store and videographer who evolved into a street artist and gallery artist after being influenced by the street artists he documented through video over the years. According to the film, Guetta was first introduced to street art by his cousin, the street artist Invader. The artwork attributed to Guetta strongly emulates the styles and artistic concepts of well-known street artists including Banksy and Shepard Fairey.

Like Banksy, Guetta employs famous artistic and historic images, many of which are copyrighted, and amends the originals in slight or significant ways. Unlike Banksy, who is shown in the film creating his own work, Guetta states in the film that his work largely consists of "scanning and photoshopping," acts which are carried out by hired assistants. Guetta further admits that most of the actual artistic process is carried out by hired graphic designers to whom he describes his ideas. Guetta's first show Life is Beautiful opened in Los Angeles, California, June 18, 2008.
In 2009, Guetta created the cover art for Madonna's Celebration album.

Mr. Brainwash will be in London next 5 of Agoust for a solo art show!!

I will never change

 -
For Benga's new video for I Will Never Change, 960 separate pieces of vinyl were carefully measured, cut, and then finally animated. The result is a real-life waveform. Directed by Us, which consists of Christopher Barrett and Luke Taylor, the first task for the pair was calculating exactly how many records per second would be needed.
-
-
"To animate the wave form, we built it and then carefully removed each individual record. This had to be done very gently as any shift in the position of the sculpture would result in the failure of the animation and as we had to literally destroy each piece of vinyl to get it off, there was only one chance to get it right. Once the sculpture was finally built, the animation process took about 30 hours.” There are some nice behind-the-scenes photos below as well, taken by Ben Jacobs.

The process of readying the vinyl for filming took seven full working days, which including measuring and cutting each individual piece, as well as hand labelling, numbering and then finally polishing.
